Anyone have some suggestions on how to improve running speed over a 5K distance?

get some leg weights and do the run a few times in them

Never been much for long runs. If I recall correctly, the workout of the best runner I spent a lot of time talking with was something like:



Mon - hill sprints

Wed - 2-3 mile run

Friday 5 mile run

He would also do different things to prepare for specific events, like 10Ks and stuff. But that was basically his standard thing.

Be wary of how much weight you use doing this. I royally screwed one of my knees up this way.

yah, a weighted vest is safer than legs weights.

You might fashion a parachute type thingy and run with that floating behind you during training.

Better shoes
and barefooted jump roping every other day is good too
