Average Mile by a Healthy 20 year old = 8 minutes, 34 seconds

Average 1x Bench Press by same = 180 pounds

Average # of situps in 1 minute by same = 40

Average # of push ups in 1 minute by same = 33

Average # of pull ups (continous, any time frame) by same = 1

Average resting heart rate of same - 60bpm

Of course if you do want to go "super" here's what you have to beat.

Fastest Mile = 3 minutes, 43 secones, and 13 tenths by Hicham El Guerrouj

1x bench Press record = 1075 pounds by Ryan Kennelly

Raw (no special straps or gear) Deadlift record = 975 pounds by Benedikt Magnusson (ALMOST HALF A TON!)

That is an extremely slow mile pace.

In my teenage years, I used to run six minutes eight seconds for one mile. I am trying to get back into shape or better. I wonder by how much could I beat just my own record by keeping a steady pace of conditioning.

Ok in comparison the overweight 38 out of shape year old tested this out and came up with the following results...

Bench press= 215 lbs.
sit ups in 1 minute= 28
push ups in 1 minute= 29
pull ups in one minute= 3
pulse rate immediately after= 96bpm

So obviously i am pretty well in need of some conditioning, but I am also not doing too bad for a guy who hasn't done any real vigorous exercise in about 7 years.

Excatly why I bumped this thread. Most of us are in decent shape, but I thought this would be a good baseline. That's not too bad of a bench, by the way.

The only bench marks I make are with my ass when we play basketball.

Well if I can't do as much as an "average" 20 year old (even at almost 40) I consider myself out of shape. I need to do at least as much as an average 20 year old and I really should be able to do as much as a semi-athletic 20 year old... something to aim for.. I am going to be setting my own benchmarks (the first ones to beat are these) thanks for this thread.

A good measure to set up benchmarks is you utilize training logs like bruce lee did. This is an excellent way to see how you are progressing. When I was doing this over the course of a month I literally doubled the amount of reps I could do, while doing 1.5 times as much weight. For example with vertical pulldowns I started at 70lbs and did 60 reps (continuously) and by the time I peaked out I was doing 140lbs and 100 reps (in the same amount of time).

Also I can average 5 or 6 pull ups in a row (in about 30 seconds). Today I did pull ups while wearing a 60lb weighted vest and could only do 3 in 40 seconds!
