Doing ladder sprints is another good way to improve how long you can maintain a high speed. As in doing 4 sets of 100m sprints then 2 sets of 200m sprints then 1 400m sprint, then back down the same way you went up. I use half of my set sprint distance as recovery time before doing my next sprint, and obviously you can't possibly full out sprint every time. Once you get used to it, it's a good workout and also helps decrease your recovery time.

I used to do six easy, back when I was on the local soccer team. Now maybe eight on a good day.
